Blog: Burnt Alive

Ok so I didn't actually get burnt alive, but it was just as scary. Kitted up in NZ Fire Service gear with oxygen tank, mask and helmet the boys at the local fire station took me through the most intensive challenge to date! They heated up their inside training area to over 70 degrees C , turned off all the lights and sent some crazy 30 fears guy through what would have to be one of the scariest environments I have ever been in. I couldn't see a thing, it was so hard to hear the other two fire fighters and the heat was so intense I thought I was going to pass out. On top of that I had to breath through a face mask and tank! We crawled through tight spaces where I got stuck and couldn't hear or see anything around me. Right at the end the guys tried to get me to lift an 80kg dummy up a flight of stairs in the pitch black! After 20 minutes in there I thought I was going to be sick from the heat and the intensity of trying to lift the weight and it was time to head for fresh air.

WOW those guys are amazing, they go into burning buildings with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees C and rescue 100kg people, and they do it with a smile on their face. Amazing experience and a big thank you to the guys at the Nelson Fire Station!
